craigslist w4w crisis, AKA “where my gurlz @?”
Metropolitan cities are the perfect breeding ground for misfired romantic connections, and those posting ads in an attempt to expedite the back-fire. Something about the size and anonymity of cities like NYC and DC makes craigslist important, where in places like Salt Lake City it somehow just seems sad.
One DC community, however, is not teaming with as much digitally captured sexual frustration as some might like. The New Gay has issued a call to action for all DC lesbians:
We all know this: the w4w ads on Craigslist suck… I know we can do better. For the next week I challenge All DC-Area Lesbians to place a regular or Missed Connection ad on Craigslist that does not suck. One that you yourself could imagine responding to. Do it. And report back.
Granted, I have forwarded this to all of my w4w applicable friends, but I am curious if this will really work. The site has only seen a slight increase in posts since the call to action, and a number of them are really good. But will they be good enough to redeem DC’s w4w craigslist community? Here is an excerpt from a post by The New Gay’s Ms. Cavanaugh from earlier this year:
Take… this 24-year-old Portland girl: “About me: I work in the arts and am very passionate about my job. In my free time, I like to take walks (especially in the snow!), watch films, and read. When I get the chance I like going to indie concerts in town. I am a reliable person, but know how to have fun. I like going out and staying in. To me, a good night could be curling up in a warm blanket with a movie and a good pizza or going to hear a band play.”
Let’s contrast that with a 19-year-old D.C. poster: “i love to eat…ill host or u can host it doesnt matter…im white 5’6..110 lbs..34c..shaved…please reply with pic!!!”
Where are your gurlz @? Apparently in Maine…
